Marriage Certificate apostille for Portugal.

Sending a Florida marriage certificate to Portugal — typically for D7/golden visa residency, citizenship — takes exactly one certificate: a Florida apostille from the Department of State in Tallahassee. Portugal is a Hague member, so once the apostille is attached, no consulate or embassy step is needed on the U.S. side.

The part that causes rejections is the document itself: the state will only apostille a certified copy from the Clerk of Court in the county that issued the license, or from the state Bureau of Vital Statistics. The state fee for this document type is $10–$20 depending on the certifying office — included in our $220 either way — and our pre-filing review confirms your copy is in the right lane before it ever reaches the counter.

Order online from anywhere in the U.S.: we review your documents, then FedEx emails you a pre-paid QR code, your marriage certificate rides to our Tallahassee team, gets walked in to the state counter in person, and comes back apostilled in 5–7 business days. Portugal-side requirements like certified translation are done after — so the apostille certificate is covered too.

How a Florida marriage certificate is used in Portugal

A Portuguese citizen who married in Florida must have the marriage transcribed into the Portuguese civil registry, through the consulate or the Conservatória dos Registos Centrais. That transcription is also the starting point for a foreign spouse's nationality: after more than three years of marriage, the spouse can declare the wish to become Portuguese; check the current conditions after the 2026 reform. The Florida certificate must be signed by the State Registrar or a Clerk of the County Court and apostilled. If either spouse was divorced before, that divorce has its own Portuguese recognition step.

Translation for Portugal

Our general rule is a translation certified by the translator, notarized by a separate notary and apostilled in Florida, but for Portugal you often need no translation at all. Civil registries can waive it for English, French or Spanish documents when the official knows the language (book ahead), and IRN nationality forms and DGES do the same. When Portugal does require one, the IRN expects it certified in Portugal by a notary, registry officer, lawyer, solicitador or recognized chamber of commerce, or by a Portuguese consulate in the issuing country.
