The most common Florida document we apostille.

Birth certificate apostille is the single most common service we perform. The driver is Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis) — Italian consulates require an apostilled birth certificate for every ancestor in your direct line of descent. Similar requirements apply for Polish, Irish, Portuguese, German, and Lithuanian dual citizenship applications, foreign marriage licenses, international work visas, and international school enrollment.

A Florida apostille on a birth certificate certifies one signature: the State Registrar's. So the certificate must be a certified copy issued by the Florida Department of Health — the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Jacksonville, any county health department, or VitalChek — on security paper with the embossed seal. Hospital souvenir certificates, photocopies and notarized copies are rejected; that is the most common reason a birth certificate comes back without an apostille. We also ask for copies certified in 2014 or later, so the signature can be verified.

No certified copy yet? Any Florida county health department can print one for a Florida birth from 1917 on, often the same day, and the Bureau and VitalChek take mail and online orders. Have it sent to you, check it, then send it to us — we file it in person in Tallahassee and return it in 5–7 business days, wherever in the U.S. you live. Step-by-step ordering guide →

Florida birth certificate apostille, step by step.

1. Get a certified copy the state can verify. It must come from the Florida Department of Health and carry the State Registrar's signature. Only Florida births qualify: a birth in another state is apostilled by that state, a Puerto Rico birth by Puerto Rico's Department of State, and a Consular Report of Birth Abroad is a federal record authenticated by the U.S. Department of State.

2. Choose the version. The Department of Health issues a computer-generated certification (what people call the short form) and a photocopy of the original record (the long form), and both can be apostilled. If the foreign office wants details such as the parents' places of birth, order the long form from the Bureau — it isn't available through VitalChek. Computer certifications for births before 2004 carry limited information, so check with the consulate first.

3. Make sure you can order it. Florida birth records under 125 years old are confidential: the registrant (18+), a parent on the record, a guardian, a legal representative or someone with a court order can order one. Anyone else needs the eligible person's notarized Affidavit to Release (form DH1958). For a deceased registrant, a spouse, child, grandchild or sibling can order it with the death certificate — common in citizenship-by-descent files.

4. Send it for the apostille. The Department of State charges $10 per birth certificate. Mailed in yourself, it typically takes five to seven weeks to come back. We review it, file it in person and return it in 5–7 business days.

Why Floridians apostille their birth certificates.

These are the most common reasons our customers need a Florida birth certificate apostilled.

Italian Citizenship (Jure Sanguinis)

By far the most common use. Italian consulates in Miami and elsewhere require an apostilled birth certificate for every ancestor in your direct line of descent. Bundle pricing applies — $380 for 2 documents, $160 each for 3+ — which matters because most applications involve 3–6 ancestor records.

Foreign Marriage

Marrying in another country? Most foreign governments require an apostilled U.S. birth certificate to confirm your identity and unmarried status before issuing a marriage license. Italy, Greece, Mexico, the Caribbean — all standard.

Polish, Irish, Portuguese, German Citizenship

Dual citizenship programs in Poland, Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Lithuania, and other countries require apostilled birth certificates for every ancestor in your line of descent.

International Work Visa

UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Singapore, Korea, China, the UK, and most EU work visas require an apostilled birth certificate as part of the background-check package.

International School Enrollment

Foreign universities and international schools — especially in Europe and Asia — request apostilled birth certificates as part of the enrollment file.

Adoption & Family Reunification

International adoption cases and foreign family reunification proceedings require apostilled birth certificates for the adopted or sponsored child.

No. Only a certified copy issued by the Florida Department of Health — the Bureau of Vital Statistics, a county health department or VitalChek — and signed by the State Registrar can be apostilled. Hospital souvenir certificates, photocopies, laminated copies and notarized copies are rejected by the Florida Department of State.
You don't need to live in Florida to use our service. Place an online order, we review your documents, then FedEx emails you a pre-paid QR code, you drop your envelope at any FedEx location in your state, and we ship the apostilled birth certificate back to your address — anywhere in the U.S. Total time including FedEx transit is typically 7–10 business days door-to-door.
Any Florida county health department can issue one for a Florida birth from 1917 on, often the same day. One for each ancestor in your direct line of descent connecting you to your Italian ancestor — usually 2–4 certificates total. We process these bundles regularly. Bundle pricing: $380 for 2 documents, $160 each for 3+. Call (850) 900-3443 if you're unsure which certificates your specific application requires.
Depends on the destination country. The apostille itself is issued in English with French and Spanish field labels. For receiving-country requirements (Italian consulates require a certified Italian translation, for example), we can recommend translators. Translation is typically done after the apostille is applied. Call (850) 900-3443 about translation + apostille →
The Florida Department of State charges $10 per birth certificate, and the certified copy itself costs $9 from the Bureau of Vital Statistics (more with rush or through VitalChek). Our service is $220 all-in — state fee, review, in-person filing and U.S. return shipping — $380 for two and $160 each for three or more.
